Vellai Colomban is a naturally selected mango variety that originated in India / Sri Lanka. The mango has strong aroma, and it tastes very sweet (tss: 20 brix). Its average weight is 220 grams. It is harvested during the early season (May in West Bengal, India). The trees are semi-dwarf, having open canopies. Being polyembryonic, Vellai Colomban mangoes are best suited for making rootstocks, in addition to being used for table purposes. It is established through research that Vellai Colomban rootstocks impart dwarfness to Alphonso. It may be noted that Vellai Colomban rootstocks can not dwarf each and every mango variety.ย
