Sonpari, originated in Gujarat, India, is a cross between Valsadi Alphonso and Banganapally (or Benisan) mango varieties. True to its name, Sonpari mangoes glitter like gold upon ripening when bagged. The variety has the potential to replace the king Alphonso on both counts - taste & flavour profile as well as commercial aspect. Besides having a highly appealing tropical, spicy aroma and out-of-the-world complex flavour profile, Sonpari tastes very sweet (TSS: up to 22 brix). Its average weight is 350-600 grams. It is harvested during mid-season (last week of June in West Bengal, India, and Florida, USA, May in Gujarat, April in Maharashtra, India, and July in northern parts of India). The trees exhibit vigorous growth habit with dense canopies (any mango tree in the world can be maintained at a low height if pruned on a regular basis). Sonpari is best suited for table purposes. It can also be processed for making ice creams, juices, canned and dried pulp. Unlike the Alphonso, Sonpari is devoid of the spongy-tissue problem. With a good shelf life it is also suitable for export. Given its increasing demand and the smaller number of its commercial orchards, Sonpari mango production in India is yet to meet the domestic demand. Sonpari is best suited for table purposes. Sonapri plants are fit for every type of garden - commercial farming, kitchen gardens / rooftop gardens.
