Shan Lin / Shan Lin No. 1

Shan Lin or Shan Lin No. 1, also written 杉林一號 (Shān Lín Yī Hào), is a Taiwanese mango variety discovered around 1991 by grower Lin Ching-ying in his orchard in Taiwan's Shanlin Township, Kaohsiung, and named after that locality. 

The mango is attractive orange-red, rounded and slightly flattened, with a raised, beak-like stigmatic scar at the blossom end — its single most recognisable field mark. It's a substantial fruit, weighing 350-650 grams, with a proportionally small seed — just 9% of fruit weight, leading to its very high pulp percentage - more than 80%. The pulp carries almost nil fiber, a rich, pronounced aroma, and a good, well-balanced flavour along with excellent taste profile (TSS unto 20°Brix sugar against 0.18% acidity, a high sugar-acid ratio).

Shan Lin has been a regular bearer at Amrakunja Nursery & Farms.

It is a mid-season (harvested in the second week of June in West Bengal, India), disease-resistant variety, easy to manage in the orchard, with firm fruit that stores and transports well — with a very good shelf life of 10-14 days, with good potential for both domestic fresh-eating and export markets. It tolerates being picked slightly under-ripe for transport and post-harvest ripening better than delicate varieties like Irwin, without losing much flavour and taste. Shan Lin is a table purpose mango.

Commercially, Shan Lin mango holds lots of potential. It's colourful, good looking and regular bearer. It has good average weight, taste and aroma profile. It's disease resistant, and semi-vigorous. It has good shelf life as well. And, on top of it, it's characteristic of delivering almost the same good taste, flavour and aroma even when it is picked at 80% ripening stage. For all these reasons, it's being farmed in 7-hectares (17.2 acres) temperature controlled green house at Yeonggwang Hong Mango Farm in Jeollanam-do province of South Korea (one may refer to the YouTube videos of ChinChanra). Mr. Park Min Ho is the owner of this farm. They started farming mangoes in the year 2012. Sometimes, Shan Lin is also called as "Korea's Apple Mango".
