Orange Sherbet, originated in Florida, USA, is a product of the famous Gary Zill mango breeding programme (Zill High Performance Nursery, Boynton Beach, Florida) and arose as a chance seedling of Lemon Meringue / Po Pyu Kalay — the celebrated heirloom mango from Myanmar. Orange Sherbet has been crowned the "Mango of the Year 2025" in the USA and currently stands as the number one mango variety of Zill High Performance Nursery in Florida. True to its name, the variety delivers a flavour experience that genuinely tastes like orange sherbet — Florida growers and tasters routinely describe it as eating an "orange sherbet push-pop" or "orange creamsicle in mango form."
The fruit ripens with a clean, bright yellow peel and reveals an orange-yellow, completely fibreless pulp that is buttery-smooth and melts in the mouth. Sweetness is exceptional (TSS as high as 27 brix), supported by an outstanding, very rich and complex citrus-forward flavour and aroma — clearly more orange-zest in character than its lemony parent Lemon Meringue. The pleasant, orangey aftertaste of Orange Sherbet lingers on the palate long after the last bite, leaving you craving more for the rest of the day. It is a table-purpose mango. Average fruit weight is around 300 grams, and the seed is small and polyembryonic, meaning seedlings come true to the mother. The trees are dwarf with a dense canopy, regular and heavy bearers that produce fruit in clusters, and disease resistant in field conditions. It is a mid-season variety, ripening by last week of June in the West Medinipur district of West Bengal, India; and around the same time in Florida, USA. At Amrakunja Nursery & Farms, Orange Sherbet fruited heavily during the 2025 season, and its legendary taste and aroma satiated the taste buds of the visiting mango lovers. During 2026 season too, it has fruited heavily - in clusters, which proves that Orange Sherbet is a very high-yielding mango variety. With a workable shelf life of 7–10 days, a compact dwarf habit, polyembryonic seed, heavy and regular bearing, disease tolerance, and an unmistakable premium flavour, Orange Sherbet shows very good prospects to be a commercial cultivar in India (it will fetch very high price in the market in India; it can also be exported to the Gulf countries for a premium price). Orange Sherbet plants are well-suited to commercial orchards, kitchen gardens, and rooftop / terrace gardens alike.
