Mesk is a premium commercial cultivar of Egypt. The name “Mesk” derives from the Arabic word for “musk”, reflecting the mango‘s intensely aromatic character. Mesk remains green after ripening, sometimes yellow with a red blush. The flavour is Alphonso-like. It has very sweet (TSS up to 24 brix) and complex taste profile. Its average weight is 275 grams. Stone is medium in size and polyembryonic. It's a mid-season variety. It ripens in the month of June in West Bengal, India, and in August in Egypt. Mesk trees are vigorous with a spreading growth habit. However, it can be kept dwarf or semi-dwarf through regular pruning. It's a regular bearing variety. The shelf life is 7-8 days if harvested at 80% ripening stage. The shelf life decreases to 4-5 days when it is harvested tree-ripened. A mango of Alphonso-like flavour is best enjoyed when it is harvested at 80% ripening stage. Mesk is a table-purpose variety. It's grown on a commercial scale in Egypt to meet its domestic demand.
Also, there is another mango (red in colour) in Florida, USA which is claimed to be Mesk. It could rather be called "USDA Mesk"/ "Florida Mesk" as it is different from the Egyptian Mesk. Amrakunja Nursery & Farms has both - Egyptian Mesk and Florida Mesk. Here the mango and plant in the photos belong to the original Mesk from Egypt.
