Maya is originated from a chance seedling mango variety at the orchard of by Prof. Hanan Oppenheimer in Israel. He named it after his wife Mrs. Maya Oppenheimer. The mangoes taste very sweet (tss: up to 22 brix) with tropical flavour profile and rich aroma. Its average weight is 250-300 grams. It is harvested during early-mid season - May-end in West Bengal, June in Florida, USA, and June-end in northern parts of India. The trees are not observed to be vigorous in Indian climatic conditions, especially in West Bengal. The trees have spreading and open canopies (any mango tree in the world can be maintained at a low height if pruned on a regular basis). Maya is best suited for table consumption. It is the number one commercial mango variety of Israel, with its top export destination being Europe. It is also commercially farmed to an extent in Australia and Egypt. Maya saplings can be planted at high density commercial farms / terrace gardens / rooftop gardens / kitchen gardens.
