Gir Kesar / Kesar (Queen of Mangoes) is a naturally selected mango variety, originated in Gir (Girnar foothills), Gujarat, India. The exquisitely aromatic mangoes taste heavenly (TSS up to 24 brix) with a hint of tartness which makes the taste outstanding. Its average weight is 250-350 grams. It is harvested during mid-season - June in West Bengal (India) and Florida (USA), July in north India. The most interesting fact of Kesar is that it can compete with modern day mango hybrids in terms of bearing and production. It is not only regular but also a heavy bearer. The trees are semi-vigorous with spreading growth habit (any mango tree in the world can be maintained at a low height if pruned on a regular basis). Kesar is best suited for table consumption. It is also heavily consumed by the Food Processing Industries for making juices/nectars, pulps, canned puree, ice creams and Indian mango desserts like ShreeKhand etc. Kesar saplings can be planted for commercial farms / Rooftop Gardens / Kitchen Garden / Terrace Garden/ Small orchard. A major chunk of India's export is occupied by Kesar. No doubt, Kesar is the queen of Indian mangoes in every aspect.
