The variety comes from the celebrated breeding programme of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida, USA, where the original tree carried the grid designation M-23. It arose as a seedling of Zill-80 — itself a direct descendant of the classic Kent — with Jakarta believed to be the pollinating parent. This pedigree places Fruit Punch within a distinguished modern lineage, making it a sibling of Super Alphonso, Carla and Edgar.
The Fruit Punch mangoes are oval and medium-sized, weighing roughly 450 to 650 grams, and rank among the most beautiful of the Zill selections. Growers often liken a perfectly finished fruit to a "dragon egg," with a fiery red blush crowning the shoulders above a base of golden-yellow and green. Fruit Punch is very aromatic - cut into one and it releases a sweet, syrupy aroma carrying a gentle resinous edge, frequently compared to Hawaiian Punch or the famous mocktail 'Fruit Punch'. The pulp is a vibrant yellowish-orange, firm and almost pear-like in texture yet entirely fibreless, buttery - melting in the mouth, and juicy. On the palate, it delivers a classic mango sweetness lifted by a well-judged acidity, with layered notes suggesting lemon, pineapple, papaya, watermelon, peach and green grapes. This "fruit cup" quality gives the variety its name. Principally a superb table mango, it is equally at home in smoothies, juices, and blended drinks. Like many specialty cultivars, it offers only a brief window of peak flavour — but caught at the right moment, Fruit Punch can taste quite exceptional!
Fruit Punch is a consistent, regular bearer, with production ranging from good to heavy. It is an early-to-mid-season mango that ripens progressively rather than all at once — an extended window running, depending on location, from as early as late May through to June, allowing the crop to be enjoyed over a longer stretch (in West Bengal, India, it starts ripening in the last week of May).
The stone is small in size, and it is monoembryonic, so the variety can only be reproduced true-to-type through grafting.
The tree is medium to large in size with a moderately vigorous, upright habit and an open canopy, giving an attractive, full shape. It responds well to annual pruning and can be comfortably held at a desired height in a home landscape - it can be planted for a rooftop garden, kitchen garden, small orchard, and farms. It could also be explored for commercial farming, as its enchanting complex flavour can fetch a good price for the farmers in India's domestic market.
