Dudh Peda / Dudh Pedo / Dudh Pendo

Dudh Peda - also spelled Dudh Pedo or Dudh Pendo, this cultivar is one of western India's most cherished mangoes, prized across Gujarat for its creamy texture and rich sweetness. The name comes from dudh — milk — a nod to the milky-smooth pulp and its resemblance in taste to the Indian milk sweet, peda.

Dudhpeda is a native Gujarati selection, long grown alongside other regional cultivars such as Kesar, and it remains a fixture of heritage mango orchards in the state — where it's classed among the traditional Rajwadi (royal) varieties.

Dudh Peda is medium-sized, developing a yellow-orange skin at ripeness. The pulp is whitish-yellow to deep saffron, completely fibreless, and exceptionally juicy, with a smooth, custard-like texture and an intensely sweet, mild flavour — free of the tang found in sharper varieties like Kesar. The flavour of Dudh Peda resembles to that of Alphonso. It ripens during the peak Indian summer season (April in Gujarat, India and June in West Bengal, India) alongside most Indian cultivars.

Average weight of Dudh Peda hovers around 160 grams, sometimes grows upto 220 grams. The sweetness is excellent, TSS around 23 brix. The seeds of Dudh Peda are monoembryonic and medium in size.

Beyond fresh eating, Dudhpeda's creamy pulp is prized for making aamras, mango lassi, milkshakes and other mango-based sweets and desserts, where its rich texture and flavour shine. Commercially it's grown on a very small scale fetches a modest market price, but it remains a well-regarded, drought-tolerant variety among growers for its hardiness and low-maintenance nature in Gujarat's dry, tropical climate.

Dudh Peda is a vigorous tree with open canopy. However, through annual, regular pruning its height can be maintained at a desired height.
