Ping Guo Wen, literally translating to "Apple Wen," is a distinctive mango variety from Taiwan that takes its name from its striking apple-like appearance. Visually, Ping Guo Wen is among the most colourful of Taiwanese mangoes — round, with a thin, deep-red skin that gives it a strong resemblance to an apple. It should not be confused with the much larger Da Ping Guo (大蘋果) or "Big Apple" mango from the same region, which is a separate, far rarer cultivar producing fruit several times its size.
The aroma is mild but pleasant, and the flavour is clean and flavourful, with a TSS of around 20 °Brix delivering a generous sweetness offset by a refreshing hint of lemon. Ping Guo Wen is a table-purpose mango.
The fruit is medium-sized, averaging around 300 grams (though premium hillside specimens in Tainan can grow considerably larger). It is a regular bearer, and the tree habit is naturally semi-dwarf, which makes it well-suited to managed orchard systems as well as smaller-scale plantings, terrace farms, and even container or rooftop cultivation. It is a mid-to-late season mango. It ripens in the first week of July in West Bengal, India.
Overall, Ping Guo Wen is a good, well-rounded variety — its striking apple-red colour, balanced sweetness with a citrusy lift, dependable regular bearing and compact tree form make it a rewarding choice for commercial growers and hobbyists alike.
