Its parentage was unknown for decades until a 2005 pedigree analysis identified it as a \u003cstrong\u003eseedling of Haden\u003c\/strong\u003e. It was first propagated in 1945 and formally named in \u003cstrong\u003e1949\u003c\/strong\u003e, and has since been planted commercially in Brazil, Puerto Rico, Australia and West Africa.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe fruit is large and distinctly \u003cstrong\u003eelongated — ovate-oblong\u003c\/strong\u003e, drawn out at both the stem and stylar ends — typically \u003cstrong\u003e1–2 lbs (450–900 g)\u003c\/strong\u003e, with exceptional specimens running heavier. Its most striking feature is colour: a deep \u003cstrong\u003epurple-crimson blush\u003c\/strong\u003e laid over a yellow base, giving ripe fruit the look of a bruised sunset. The flesh is \u003cstrong\u003eorange-yellow with little fibre\u003c\/strong\u003e, smooth and firm-textured, with a weak aroma and a \u003cstrong\u003emild, sweet flavour of good quality\u003c\/strong\u003e — unassertive rather than complex, which makes it a reliable crowd-pleaser and an excellent fruit for juices, smoothies and desserts. The seed is \u003cstrong\u003emonoembryonic\u003c\/strong\u003e and relatively thin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIt is a \u003cstrong\u003elate midseason to late-season\u003c\/strong\u003e cultivar, ripening \u003cstrong\u003eJuly to early September\u003c\/strong\u003e in Florida, USA (in July-August in West Bengal, India). One important caveat noted by growers and the trade: \u003cstrong\u003ePalmer colours up early, and the blush is not a reliable indicator of maturity\u003c\/strong\u003e, so fruit is frequently picked immature, which blunts its flavour. Judge ripeness by feel and shoulder fill, not by colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe tree is \u003cstrong\u003emoderately vigorous with a distinctly upright canopy\u003c\/strong\u003e and bears consistently.
